Maid-N-Meadows: Fall Update 2019

  Fall sure has been a doozy! I don't know about anyone else, but the heat combined with no rain turned our pastures into dust! Our cows suffered and so did our milk production! But that wasn't our biggest challenge of the season. As soon as we started to experience a cool down and a bit of rain, we got hit with a family crisis.....one that would take a month to recover from.

Raising Meat Chickens

      Many years ago, I got 10 Cornish Cross meat chickens to try and raise a little meat for my family. It was May and they were cute and cuddly and were fun to watch as they snapped up bugs and gorged on clover blossoms. As butchering time approached and they became big, clumsy beasts, it was July. They were not fairing well in the heat. They panted and waddled over to their water and then stretched back out in the shade. Occasionally one would be dead for no apparent reason, though I suspected the heat was playing a role.
      I decided I wasn't doing that again! Losing a six pound bird is expensive, not to mention the animals didn't seem too happy in the heat. Who could blame them?

Why We Started Maid-N-Meadows

           I have been sharing some of our journey in the cheese business, but I thought today I should share some of the personal reasons of why we actually started this journey to begin with. What really pushed us forward was a time of crisis in our family and marriage....this business, was actually born out of a serendipitous opportunity in a time of insane uncertainty. While our friends were supportive, there was no getting around that given the stress we were relating to, this was a rather risky time to invest in such a huge undertaking.

           Looking back though, I think the business was a beacon of hope. It was something that we could build together, even though at that moment  we had forgotten how to work together. The efforts we have undertaken to make our family stronger were and are valiant ones. But this business is still in the early stages and the hours are rough. I still look back in wonder at how far we have come, but I still wonder about the path forward!

Sitting Out: A Day On The Farm

          "Normal life" is starting to materialize on the farm! We have a huge backlog of bills, repairs, maintenance, and gardening work to keep us busy, but we can feel some hope of achievement, at least. Calves are being born, milk is in the tank, and cheese is getting made....all within a mile of one another. We don't miss the three hour trip to the old facility one bit! We even have a little time to stop and smell the ironweed and goldenrod!

Their large gardens, combined with a determined work ethic, yield hundreds of jars of food for the winter every year. But Amish and Mennonite folk don't just work hard, they work smart, too. Family Gardening! Tips and Tactics To Battle The Weeds!

           
  It is July and we have squash coming out of our ears! After spending our summers driving to Windsor's cheese facility for the past two years, this year we had a garden. And not just any garden! Oh no, it is the biggest garden we have had in 10 years! Go big or bust right? It has been a challenge to keep up with it while we were working on our home facility, but Karson has the farming bug, especially if it involves some kind of engine.....tractor, tiller....He wanted to try some larger scale growing to share produce this year with the hopes that he can sell a little next year.
              So with about 60 hills of watermelon, 10 hills of butternut, 50 hills of cantaloupe, 50 lbs of potatoes, 65 tomato plants, and a lot of corn, keeping the weeds back has been a battle. But I thought I would share the various techniques we use to keep the fight to a minimum.

Say CHEESE!

           Its been about a week and a half since we were finally approved to make cheese. Honestly, when we passed, it didn't feel real. I have told myself so many times, "We will be making cheese in a week!" So many times I have been very, very wrong! Meanwhile, the cheese was running low and then practically OUT! As it sits, our new cheese won't be ready until September. But hey, we are back making cheese and that is all that matters.

Maid-N-Meadows- LATE Spring 2019 Update

           This is such a hard post to write as we are not done! We are not ready to make cheese! We are still just plugging away the facility and milking parlor. To me it is all that I can really bear right now. I am so tired of setting proposed dates in my mind for completion that just come and go, that I kind of just watch, shell shocked. Daniel says he feels like a hamster on a wheel, but he can still feel some progress.


      And we have made a lot of progress! We have had so, so much help, too. But we have two things going against us right now. One is that we have still been distributing cheese and doing events. This takes so much time! And two, we are doing so much of the work ourselves.
      For example, here is our new cheese vat! It is really just a bulk milk tank. But the top had
to come off and the insides gutted and, and, and.....
           If this sounds like complaining, it really isn't. It is really meant to be a reminder to myself and a warning to others considering undertaking this kind of venture. The lesson is: If you want to save some bucks and do it all yourself, expect it to take a very long time. If, like us, you are trying to run a business at the same time you are building your facility, consider whether you are saving more by doing it yourself or actually losing due to lost revenue.
      As we dive into this final stage, you won't see us at the farmer's markets! We just can't afford to spend the extra time doing all the driving it would take. (Three hours just to go to the current facility and four hours down to Nashville and back!) If our cheese runs low at the store, know that we are plugging away and doing our best!
       We love all of you guys and can't hardly wait to see everyone again! We have some cool surprises to share soon and we have a whole lot to be excited about! Wahoo! See you at the markets!

How To Grow Sweet Potato Slips

        We are approaching the dead of winter, here in Kentucky, and we are getting excited about the garden. We have not done much in the past few years because we were driving back and forth to Windsor for Maid-N-Meadows. But this year we will be home and gardening is back on the "joy" list!
       Sweet potatoes are grand foods because they store over the winter, don't need to be frozen or canned, and they can just go in the oven and come out ready to eat! Homestead convenience food! But my favorite thing about them is that if your stored taters start going bad, just cook them a little and feed them to almost any farm animal. Chickens are crazy about cooked sweet potatoes. So if your family does not eat them, all the hard work in digging them up is not wasted as they can feed your critters and save on the feed bill!

Maid-N-Meadows and Kiva: Crowdfunding LOANS!

               Small business owners know how hard it is to secure financing in a pinch, especially for micro loans! Knowing we needed a little extra help to complete our project on time, we contacted Kiva for a bit of help. Their mission is "to connect people through lending to alleviate poverty."
Basically, they provide a worldwide platform to crowdfund interest free loans to small businesses!
                                                      OUR KIVA PROFILE!

          The loan process was simple. We simply needed to share what the funding was for and tell a little about ourselves and our business. One really ingenius litmus test of creditworthiness is Kiva's requirement that each loan be partially funded by people in your personal network! After you reach that goal, (Ours was 20 people.) Kiva launches your profile to a network of worldwide lenders. Lenders use their paypal account so their bank information isn't just idling in Kiva. Plus, every dollar can go directly to the loan, while a corporate sponsor matches every loan, dollar for dollar! Our sponsor is Google.org
      To enhance our profile, we worked hard on a video. It was harder than we originally thought to look at a phone and talk as if we were speaking to an actual person. To help with that, Daniel had me peak around the side of the camera so that he could look directly at me when he was speaking. The hardest part of the video was explaining how we had started Maid-N-Meadows. It required Daniel to speak about shutting the commercial dairy down, 9 years ago. It took two days and several takes. Every time Daniel started talking about that time, he teared up and had to stop to blow his nose!
     
     It's interesting, nine years ago, when the Dairy Farmers of America  (The cooperative that bought our milk.)  fieldman stopped by to inform us that we did not have enough milk to be worth a stop to pick it up, no other words passed between Daniel and I. We both knew it was time to close up shop.
      I was quietly relieved. Milk prices were rock bottom and we had racked up a terribly high feed bill over the winter. Daniel had just gotten a job with the Post Office to keep food on the table and he was driving back and forth to Louisville, Kentucky for training. He had spent the last two weeks milking the cows at about 7 p.m. and then again at 2:30 a.m. Daniel was living on caffeine. But the cows couldn't handle that schedule and our production tanked from an already dismal amount. The crux of it is this: Daniel had given everything he had to hold everything together....and it just was not enough.

          Daniel was crushed. He had milked the cows in his herd for several generations. With each one, he could tell you their mother's name and their grandmother's name and some their great-grandmother's name. We were deeply in debt, but not a single cow went to the stock-pen. Later, Daniel did herd health for another dairy and leased his cows where they would be under his supervision. But I did not realize how deeply loosing the dairy still affected him until we made that video.
        As of today, we are 51% to our goal of $10,000, for the last of the equipment we will need. Normally we would work a little longer until we could just pay our way with cash. This time we are in a pinch because we have restaurants and stores that rely on steady product.....product we will run out of if we do not resume production soon. So are asking for some help and would love it if you would consider lending to us! So many friends, family, and customers have been so supportive, not to mention international lenders! If we could reach a few more people, we could wind this up this week!
      For those looking for funding, we couldn't recommend Kiva any higher! The staff have been supportive and the Kiva community has been generous! Follow their recommendations and have a plan for your business and the rest should take care of itself, Lord willing!

Creating New Markets For Dairy Farmers

      We all know the "plight" of America's dairy farmers. Over production has led to low milk prices. With the cost of fuel, feed, and other inputs as high as ever, family farms that have been milking for generations are folding. "Get big or get out!" is the rallying cry of efficiency, driven by trucking companies and processors who are under their own  financial squeeze. Whole herds of cows are being unloaded at the stock pen and only the best escape the slaughter house. Prices are dismal and a good heifer can be bought for a steal right now. BUT WAIT! What if I told you this doesn't have to be!
 
      We farmers hear all kinds of excuses. "Fluid milk demand is dropping!" "There is a worldwide milk glut!" "There is an oversupply!"
       FOLKS! I am here to tell you that is only half of the truth! Much more subversive forces are acting upon our operations. What is happening is not a surprise or some kind of random misfortune and the attacks on us are coming from our own marketing advocates. They send farmers their "cut off notices" with a suicide prevention hotline number! They pat us on the backs and say, "This is the way of the world." while they cut us off at the knees and think nothing of it.

      We are trusting the wrong people with our livelihoods.

      DFA, a wolf in sheep's clothing, poses itself as a nonprofit cooperative working on the behalf of farmers to get us the best price for our product. Instead, it acts like a cartel: buying up processors and shutting down competition. Wherever DFA goes, competition dies and milk prices are artificially depressed. As dairies all over the country have toppled, the management of DFA has walked away with millions. (Citation is on page 6 of lawsuit.)
       Our commercial dairy folded, under the weight of debt, 8 years ago.  We were working 16 hour days and basically paying to do it, while the cooperative that was buying and "marketing" our milk was linked arm and arm with Dean Foods. Ironically, Dean Foods was posting record profits while we were posting record feed debts! The alliance between DFA and Dean Foods to allegedly monopolize the market, ultimately, resulted in settlements of millions of dollars paid to Southeastern farmers. But for us, it was too late. The settlement paid to farmers was pennies on the dollar compared to what we lost and years too late to save our farms.

     Indeed, in a recent lawsuit between Northeastern farmers and DFA, farmers allege that DFA coerced and threatened farmers to accept the former class action settlement of roughly 4,000 dollars per farmer or face "the consequences". (Page 5 of lawsuit) It is doubtful that 4,000 dollars even covered the average loss for a farmer for even one month, meanwhile DFA would have saved millions in possible settlement costs.
     The bottom line is that we have entrusted our product and industry to those who profit off of our  labors and leave us wallowing in debt.

      Who is looking out for the dairy farmer? 

     While attending Kentucky's Milk Safety Conference last year, I got an insiders view into the challenges of our state's dairies, milk transport companies, and processors. The most unsettling bit is this- Kentucky is only producing about 40% of what our state milk processors use. The rest is SHIPPED in. And the shipped milk costs the SAME as local milk, courtesy of government subsidies! That means that when Dean Foods cut contracts with Kentucky farmers last year, there should have been zero issue getting these farmers contracts with different processors.
     Kentucky is not overproducing milk, and if not for government subsidies, milk would actually be in DEMAND. Why aren't our politicians on this? Why are our milk buyers selling northern milk to our local processors, at the expense of our farms? And why aren't we farmers doing something about this?

      Creating new opportunities for OURSELVES!

     Farmers! We have allowed ourselves to be led like lambs to the slaughter. Let us examine our operations and consider the options. How bad do we want to be dairy farmers? How much harder are we willing to work? We need a processor! We need a market for our milk. No one is going to save us. We are going to have to do this for ourselves and our families. 

     Down here in Barren County, Kentucky, we are trying to do just that. Right now, we are building a small cheese processing facility. We have had a lot of breaks along the way. A wonderful mentor, a facility to rent while we established ourselves, and an amazingly supportive community, have made this venture viable. Now we are looking to turn this around and be a starting place for other farmers to stay in the business. 

     Regulations and codes have become the largest barrier of entry into the dairy value-added industry. We farmers are a community and we need to be looking out for one another! Lets not wait until it is too late for our neighbors to hold on! Contact your extension agents, or if you are local, get in touch with us! Get together and find out how you can help each other build a hopeful future for the next generation.

     We can do this.

     We have worked hard, no doubt. We have packaged cheese into the night and right on through till morning to meet deadlines. We have slept in cars, eaten sandwiches for weeks on end, and faced one or two shut off notices. But this is our livelihood and we are going to fight for it! 
      We have built the facility itself with a $35,000 loan, which was facilitated with the help of the Kentucky Agricultural Development Fund. With the most basic equipment, a facility can be put together for about 20K. Lord willing, Kiva lenders will help us complete that funding. Getting in with KCARD has helped us get tips on funding, both federal and state, and on loans and grants. We can regain control of our industry and our product.
    
   We can't imagine living any other way, doing anything else. If you feel the same, we are here for you.

Maid-N-Meadows- Winter 2019 Update

        There has been a flurry of activity going on at the farm over the past few months! With spring just around the corner, there is almost a panicked fever taking over. The facility must be completed soon if our winter stores of cheese are to hold out until the new cheese is ready to sell. But it feels like an upstream swim and we are beginning to strongly resemble chickens with their heads cut off.

Goats And Winter Kidding

                 It has been a banner week for goats on the farm! We are at 17 kids born now and still have 2 days to go. This really wasn't something we planned. Kidding in late January, with day time highs in the 30's is really a recipe for disaster. Kids freeze before they dry and the nannies can't keep the warm enough on their own. A baby that is too cold to get up for a warm drink of milk, is doomed.

Married To An Ex Mennonite: Part 2

       The longer I knew Daniel the more I got to know his family. I fell in love with any of them that would meet me. The first time I met his mother I asked her "What time in your life do you remember most fondly?"  Her happiest time, she said, was when all her children were under one roof! At the time, it warmed my heart and I admired her motherly heart. But later I realized that her words were far from sentimental, sappy recollections of the past. She was remembering her family when it was whole....something it may never be again.
