I hope everyone out there is getting as excited for spring as we are! It has been unseasonably warm this year. So much so that the daffodils bloomed 2 weeks early!
We never had a proper cold snap in January. We finally dropped the taps into the trees, anyway. Today, as I write, our stove is covered in pots, slowly evaporating sap for a couple of pints of sweet maple syrup.
In other news, baby Elora is growing by leaps and bounds.
Her birth weight in October was 4lbs and 10oz. Today, she sends the scales to 12 pounds! She has been a very easy baby since we left the hospital. Elora is the 10th child in this family. I feel like we are pretty complete now.
As farmers, it seems that no season comes with the promise of a harvest. This job comes with the highest of highs and lowest of lows. Last fall was hot and dry. Our grass withered away and so did the milk we use to make cheese. We didn't go into the winter very strong. But Daniel always seems to have a few tricks up his sleeve. His services are always desired in the local neighborhood and he has done some selective logging (Trees that have damage.) to make ends meet.
Precious little lamb came to stay with us! |
Meanwhile, life on the farm keeps on going, lighting the flames of hope and renewal. Baby season is upon us. We have had 4 new calves in the past month. Three new dairy lambs were born two weeks ago. Now it is the goat's turn, this week, to bring forth new life.
March is so close and we are getting excited for all things garden and farm. The pepper seeds are started, the grass is trying to grow, and we are starting all the familiar preparations for making cheese. We are doing maintenance in the barn, hanging new gates, stocking and cleaning the cheese facility, and scheduling our spring farm events.
Spring is a time for hope and that is where we hang as we look forward to this new year of challenges.
